The Base Occasional is a platform for new work in contemporary dance and performance that takes place when the opportunity arises and resources allow. Curated by Base staff and co-founders, the Base Occasional celebrates the organization’s mission to elevate risk in dance and performance by showcasing mostly out-of-town artists who are pushing the edges of their disciplines.

Presented in September 2017, Base Occasional No. 1 featured short works by Dayna Hanson, Heather Kravas, Peggy Piacenza and Maureen Whiting. Base Occasional No. 2, presented in November 2018, featured New York-based theater and performance artists Paul Lazar in his critically lauded solo work, Cage Shuffle. In August 2019, Base Occasional No. 3 featured Still Life, Minneapolis-based choreographer Morgan Thorson’s acclaimed ensemble installation work, produced at Base in partnership with On the Boards and Seattle Art Fair. Base Occasional was revived after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in February 2024 with an original adaptation of a Noh theater script, Ama, the Diver, by Jim Fletcher, Lori Goldston and Katiana Gonçales Rangel, in a co-presentation with the artists.
